Guest Post 2 - The Taste of Colours and Blood ~ Sophie Maguire
The Taste of Colours and Blood
There was something in the air.
They could smell it, taste it. Perhaps it was the ember oranges of the rotten, decaying leaves on the ground. The moss greens of the fresh pines. The fire-reds of the holly berries. But no. The colours, so fresh and cold on their tongues, their perfection, were marred by something heavy, something rusted and thick. Something both alluring and repugnant, awakening an insatiable desire that had been hidden so long within them, the two had forgotten it was there. The smell was blood, and they were hungry for it.
The sky was a wave-ombre, like a sheet of glowing satin with sparkles on the seams. As the two on the field looked at the field ahead of them, with its idyllic houses, markets and squares, a feeling of longing rose in one of them, and loss in the other. They were a girl and boy, though they would soon be man and woman.
The girl had pale skin, so pale it seemed to glow in the rising sun. She had long, curly, cinder-black hair which hid her face. What could be seen, however, was a rare and delicate face, one not often seen upon a mortal face. It was only the sharp line of her mouth, and the tense, yet graceful way she stood, which showed a fearsome, and far from-delicate nature. The boy also had pale skin, but his hair was frost-white, straight and cropped, like wheat wrapped in snow. His eyes, like the girl’s, were a sharp, golden colour, as though molten metal had been trapped in hollows within their eyes.
The girl turned to her brother, a look of desperation on her face. She held out her hand to him, knowing she would not be able to resist the stench of the blood without her twin. The boy returned her gaze, though his was filled with confusion.
Why? He thought gently.
I can’t explain it. She projected. But you feel it too. Something’s different.
And that was true. So he took her hand, and silently prepared for the oncoming obstacles he knew they would face…
